Instead of its typical large ensemble, this spring the Meadows Symphony will feature the Meadows Chamber Orchestra, a small orchestra of approximately 20 players. The concert, led by music director Paul Phillips, will open with Thomas Adès’ Chamber Symphony (1990). Critic Joshua Kosman praised the work, written when the composer was just 19, for its “sass and vivacity,” calling it “a little masterpiece of zippy density.” The program will then feature the world premiere of Lullabies for Harp, Strings and Percussion by noted Danish composer Jesper Koch, featuring faculty member Naoko Nakamura as harp soloist. The first lullaby, meditative and mysterious, is about nature going to sleep, a foggy meadow in late summer with occasional nature sounds breaking the silence; the second, “Haruki’s Lullaby,” is a simple, innocent song to lull a little boy to sleep. The final work of the concert, Botticelli Tryptich (1927) by Ottorino Respighi, brings to life three paintings by the Italian Renaissance master Botticelli, “Spring,” “The Adoration of the Magi” and “The Birth of Venus.” To register to watch the livestreaming concert, please visit http://blog.smu.edu/meadows/mso3-14-21/.
