The Meadows Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jon D. Lee, presents a lively fall concert showcasing a variety of works. Opening the evening is Christopher Rouse’s brutal Ogoun Badagris, a piece depicting a voodoo deity. Next will be a mallet quartet by Meadows alum Justin Preece, Quatrefoil, followed by Michael Laurello’s percussion quartet, Spine. The first half will end with the monumental Concerto for Organ with Percussion Orchestra by Lou Harrison, featuring Meadows student Joshua Boyd on the Fisk Organ Opus 101 in Caruth Auditorium. This significant but rarely performed work uses a host of unusual instruments: oxygen tank bells, box drums, ratchets and more. The second half opens with a hand-drumming piece written by Meadows World Music Ensemble director Jamal Mohamed. Next, two Meadows students, Jacob Hord and Vivian Glick, will each perform a different xylophone ragtime solo. The concert concludes with an exciting world premiere by Meadows composer and faculty member Dr. Lane Harder in honor of legendary rock drummer Neil Peart, who passed away in January. The new work, Peart, brings together some of the most famous drum parts ever performed by Neil with the mega-group Rush. The featured soloist will be Meadows percussion faculty member and percussion department co-coordinator, Drew Lane. For more information call 214.768.2787. To watch the livestream register here.
