Amanda Dotseth, curator, Meadows Museum
The Meadows Museum’s sixteenth-century panel painting by the recently identified Master of Sigena has inspired new research by museum staff and international scholars alike. Hitherto little was known about the painter or about the woman who commissioned him to paint the stunning panel. Once part of a monumental altarpiece from a royal convent in the Crown of Aragón in northeast Spain, the panel witnessed medieval religious ritual and modern war. This pair of online lectures takes a long look at an artwork whose life is as colorful as its palette, spanning the six centuries between its 1519 conception and its acquisition by the Meadows Museum.
