The Clements Department of History presents a Stanton Sharp Lecture with Dr. Kimberly D. Hill, assistant professor of history at the University of Texas at Dallas. The past year has taught many educators the balancing act between promoting sacrifice and encouraging others to pursue their dreams. This lecture details how a team of Presbyterian missionaries adjusted to similar circumstances, particularly in the years surrounding the 1918 Flu Pandemic. Dr. Hill will focus on the experiences of Althea Brown and Alonzo Edmiston, a married couple whose personal and professional goals depended on helping their communities survive public health crises. She will discuss how segregation and colonialism exacerbated unhealthy conditions in the Belgian Congo and in the Edmiston's home base of Selma, Alabama.
